SKIN DEEP
Self portrait from within.
CACTUS ROSE
First impressions, be they good or bad, usually dictate the direction and form of our subsequent behaviour and opinion.
Save your reaction until the final work is complete.
THE HATCHLINGS
This sketch forms the basis for demonstrating the compatibility of intrinsically diverse elements.
WHITE RABBIT
If development proceeds the way I want it to (and there are no guarantees) this sketch displays a certain degree of
metamorphosis that I hope to capture in the finished work.
SPACE DEBRIS
Final work completed
THE OVERSEER
Understatement can be applied here as, with many of my preparation notes, it fails to communicate
a clear direction to the casual observer. Completion undecided.
THE CREVASSE
This composition, with its
psychological implications could, after consideration, deter me from spending time in a discomfort zone.
It's fate, yet to be decided.
SNAKE CHARMER
CABBAGE PATCH
I see the growing population on earth as analogous to my very early attempts at growing
vegetables - cabbages in particular. Planted too close together, the results as they grew became
catastrophic. But
I, at least, learned in time.
GOANNA WRESTLING
I am attracted to this futile concept by its pictorial possibilities, nothing more. The insatiable appetite for recognition and the primitive depths to which man will revert to achieve it, appears to be a necessary by-product of civilisation.
FRANGIPANI
An all too familiar theme not about to be ignored. This treatment is certainly under consideration.
METROPOLIS
Another invasion of the psyche by irrational forces. Development of the work will ensue and materialize in due
course. That is all that can be guaranteed.
UNINHIBITED DANCE
This working title encompasses the general impression of dance that
the sketch was designed to convey.
FRAGMENTS OF A LIFE
The uninitiated could use the word turmoil to describe this composition. Without going into details, I would say it runs parallel, quite precisely, to my teen years. When my subconscious decides
to inexplicably throw up lost images of the past, I am a most grateful recipient.
BREAKING OUT
Near completion - comment provided with painting.
IMPULSE
Liberation on impulse by its very nature implies lack of
deliberation and consideration of the ramifications. At this point prolonged hibernation seems like a good idea. I'll do the painting when, and if, I return...see you at the hanging.
LOVE
Final work completed.
SOLO
The transition of this sketch to canvas will require diligence during the
operation in order to preserve it's outwardly simple and uncomplicated posture. All too
often the subtleties present in an original sketch are nullified during transition to the point of rendering the work irrelevant.
TIN MEN
I can claim only the element of inspiration for this work. It was provoked by seeing a photograph of tin miners on strike in Cornwall,
South West England, taken in 1923. Age and weathering of the original plate caused the emulsion to move to one side. The distorted image
recently fell out of my subconscious.
THREADBARE
Was originally destined to be a member of the 'Driftwood People' series. I now intend breathing new life into this interesting and successful concept.
BLOCK OUT
This treatment is appropriate and in tune with the subject matter. Nevertheless, I may not proceed with a canvas unless called for.
